It was one of the largest repair projects undertaken by the Highways Agency. The viaduct is over a mile long, handling over 160,000 vehicles per day. It stands at more than a 100 feet high and weighs over 58,000 tons.
Thelwall Viaduct comprises of 35 piers and 2 abutments and when the roller bearings were found to have failed. Hevilifts designed bespoke jacks to support the bridge to facilitate bearing replacement. During this operation it was found the rocker bearings also required replacement and Hevilifts worked with the bridge engineers to engineer a jacking solution.
Whilst the bridge was supported Hevilifts installed a remote monitoring system which monitored the pier movements on the river piers.
